If you’re choosing a printing method for industrial nameplates, control panels, or equipment tags, two options often come up: MetalPhoto® and screen printing. On the surface, they both put graphics onto metal, but how they do it and how those results perform couldn’t be more different.

At Industrial Nameplates, we do one better.

Two anodized aluminum nameplates with black and gold finish.

We specialize in sub-surface printing on anodized aluminum—a process where we basically anodize the aluminum, print your design into the open pores of the anodized layer, and then seal it.

That means your graphics are locked beneath a hard, transparent surface, protected from wear, chemicals, UV, and abrasion. This is not the same as “standard” screen printing, which sits on top of the surface and may wear off.

Let’s break it down so you can pick the method that matches your environment, your compliance needs, and your budget.

What Is MetalPhoto®?

Durable Metalphoto® data plates with engraved barcodes and QR codes, used for asset tracking and regulatory compliance in industrial settings.

MetalPhoto® is a specialized photo-anodizing process used primarily on aluminum. Instead of printing ink on top of the surface, the image is embedded beneath a sapphire-hard anodized layer. This is done by anodizing aluminium to create a porous layer. Photosensitive chemicals capture the design or text, and then the image is sealed under the anodic layer, locking it in permanently.

Some of its key technical advantages include:

  • Extreme durability: The image is literally sealed inside the metal.
  • Superior resistance: Holds up against UV exposure, salt spray, chemicals, abrasion, and extreme temperatures.
  • Variable data: Great for data like barcodes, serial numbers, or QR codes
  • High resolution: Can reproduce fine lines, small text, and complex barcodes that remain scannable for decades.
  • Long lifespan: Often lasts 20+ years, even in harsh environments.

Where it’s ideally used:

Military equipment, aerospace, industrial machinery, outdoor signage, and anywhere compliance requires labels to remain legible for the lifetime of the asset.

Many industries, including aerospace, defence, and certain marine applications, mandate MetalPhoto® because it meets US military specification MIL-STD-15024 and other durability standards. For example, in offshore oil platforms, we’ve seen MetalPhoto® tags remain fully legible after decades of constant salt spray and extreme temperature cycles.

What Is Sub-Surface Printing?

Three durable black aluminum asset tags for Vermilion Energy, printed with serial numbers and company contact details.

Our sub-surface printing starts with high-quality anodized aluminum, just like MetalPhoto. The difference is that we anodize, print, and then seal.

Printing happens while the anodized layer’s pores are open, so the ink penetrates below the surface. Once sealed, the ink is literally locked in, becoming part of the aluminum.

This process has key advantages over standard “surface” printing:

  • Superior durability: Graphics resist scratching, fading, and abrasion
  • Chemical resistance: Withstands fuels, solvents, cleaning agents, and salt spray
  • UV stability: Ideal for outdoor use
  • Vibrant colour: Unlike MetalPhoto’s monochrome output, sub-surface printing supports full-colour designs
  • Cost-effective for high volumes: Higher setup cost than MetalPhoto, but much lower per-piece cost in larger runs

Where it’s ideally used:

High-volume industrial nameplates, compliance and safety plates, instructional panels, and applications that demand vibrant graphics with maximum durability against abrasion, chemicals, and outdoor exposure.

Comparing Performance

Feature MetalPhoto® Sub-Surface Printing
Durability Excellent for monochrome graphics, but can show wear with heavy abrasion over decades Exceptional. Ink is locked beneath anodized surface for maximum abrasion, chemical, and UV resistance
Colour Capability Monochrome (black on silver) Colour or monochrome
Variable Data Ideal for serial numbers, barcodes, QR codes, and custom fields Static designs. All pieces in a run are identical
Run Size Best for short runs or custom one-offs Best for high-volume runs with identical designs
Setup Cost Low Higher than MetalPhoto, but lower per-unit cost in volume
Applications Asset tracking, compliance plates with unique identifiers Safety signage, compliance plates, branding, instructional panels

Choosing the Right Method for Your Application

Go MetalPhoto if:

  • You need unique data on each plate
  • Your run size is small and setup costs need to be minimal
  • Monochrome graphics are acceptable

Go Sub-Surface Printing if:

  • You want maximum durability with colour capability
  • You need large runs of identical plates at a competitive per-unit cost
  • Your plates will face harsh outdoor, marine, or industrial conditions

Final Words

At Industrial Nameplates, we work with both MetalPhoto® and our own sub-surface anodized printing, and we’ll never suggest one without first looking closely at your application.

If you need small batches with variable data that must remain legible for decades in harsh field conditions, MetalPhoto® is often the best fit. If you’re producing high-volume plates with bold colours that have to endure heavy wear, chemicals, and outdoor exposure, our sub-surface printing is hard to beat.

We’re happy to review your drawings, CAD files, or even photos of your equipment to recommend the right process before you commit. That way, you avoid costly reprints and ensure your plates are fit for purpose from day one.
