Here’s something we say a lot around here: You can spec the toughest nameplate, but if the install doesn’t hold up, none of it matters.
We’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to mounting metal nameplates. So let’s walk through how to properly install your metal nameplates using adhesives, glue, or rivets. And when to use each method.

Choose the Right Installation Method
Before reaching for a tool or tube of glue, here are some questions you should ask:
- What surface are you applying to? Smooth, textured, painted, or curved?
- Where will the nameplate live? Indoors, outdoors, near chemicals or heat?
- How long does it need to last? Temporary signage or long-term traceability?
- What are the visual or safety requirements? Tamper-proof? Discreet? Visible from afar?
Method 1: Adhesive Backing
Best for: Smooth, clean surfaces, especially indoors or in controlled environments.
Steps:
- Clean the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol or degreaser.
- Let it dry completely.
- Peel off the protective liner from the adhesive backing.
- Press the nameplate firmly into place, starting from the centre and working outward.
- If you’re applying outdoors or near heat sources, ask us about industrial-grade adhesive options.

Method 2: Industrial Glue or Epoxy
Best for: Irregular, curved, or difficult surfaces where adhesives won’t stick well.
Steps:
- Lightly roughen both the back of the nameplate and the mounting surface.
- Apply the glue evenly across the back of the plate. Make sure not to overapply (excess adhesive creates uneven pressure points, takes longer to cure, and may even seep out from behind the nameplate)
- Press into place and hold, or clamp lightly while it cures (check product instructions).
- Let it cure completely before exposing it to heat or moisture.
Pro Tip: Use only glues that are safe for your nameplate material (e.g., aluminum vs. stainless steel) and compatible with the mounting surface.
Method 3: Rivets or Screws
Best for: Permanent installations in heavy-duty, high-vibration, or outdoor environments such as on machinery, vehicles, electrical panels, or structural components.
When you’re working with metal nameplates, mechanical fastening gives you unmatched durability. Rivets or screws ensure the plate stays put even when exposed to heat, moisture, or continuous vibration—conditions where adhesives might eventually fail.
Steps:
- Use the nameplate as a template to mark where the holes will go. For accuracy, use a center punch to prevent drill bit slippage on metal surfaces.
- Use an appropriate drill bit for the substrate (steel, aluminum, etc.). If you’re fastening into metal, a high-speed steel or cobalt bit is usually best.
- Line it up carefully with your drilled holes. If needed, use clamps or tape to hold the plate in place during fastening.
- Insert the rivets or screws and tighten them until snug. Make sure not to over-tighten. This can deform the nameplate, especially if it’s thinner-gauge metal.
Bonus Tip:
For curved or uneven surfaces, use rivets with a backing washer. This will help distribute pressure evenly and avoid bending the plate.

Adhesive vs Glue vs Rivets
Each installation method has its strengths and limitations. Here’s a comparison to help you make the decision:
| Method | Pros | Cons |
| Adhesive |

| Glue |

How to Make Your Nameplate Installation Last Longer
- Store nameplates flat and clean before installation.
- Avoid mounting over rust, loose paint, or moisture.
- Match your installation method to your environment. Heat, chemical exposure, and UV matter.
- For theft-prone or public areas, ask us about tamper-proof fasteners.
- Make sure all surfaces are degreased before applying adhesives or glue.
- For mechanical fasteners, use corrosion-resistant hardware (like stainless steel) to avoid long-term damage.
A Nameplate that Stays Put Is a Nameplate that Does Its Job
Whether you’re working with stainless steel or aluminum nameplates, the way you mount them makes all the difference in how it looks and how long it stays put.
